CREDIT CARDS

12th March 2006.

Members keep asking why we don't take credit cards anymore.

There are two reasons:

  1. The fees and charges banks levy plus the 10% GST is often more than the margin the club can make on an activity.
For example the bank fee charged to us is 4.5% plus accounting fees. On say a Qantas ore Air New Zealand air ticket we are only paid 5% commission, so by the time we have processed the booking, written the ticket and paid the postage to send it out we would be losing money.
  2. The incidence of credit card fraud has grown out of all proportion and we not the banks are left holding the baby. The banks don't tell us that the card has been fraudulently used until 2/3 months after the sale. We have some frauds run as high as $30,000 in a  month.

Besides a lot of members are reluctant still to give out their credit card number over the internet and we don't blame them.

Internet banking transfers are quick, safe and easy and there are two simple alternatives if you don't use internet banking.

For those who wish to make  a safe credit card payment we have introduced Paymate a bank endorsed credit card processor. See www.atlas-club.com.au/pay.htm  Using Paymate you can make a safe secure internet credit card payment, but you will be charged a fee of approximately 4% over the amount payable to compensate the fees charged by the banks just at Telstra, Qantas and Virginblue now charge for using a credit card. This fee recovery has been authorised by Reserve Bank of Australia.
